Lexie’s navy bust By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough Girls’ College old girl Lexie Gray is back in Blenheim, far removed from her involvement in two big New Zealand Navy drug busts recently. Lexie is a head chef on the frigate HMNZS Te Kaha, which seized about NZ$235 million worth of heroin in two separate discoveries in the Indian Ocean earlier this year as part of Operation Haku.

A second bust five days later uncovered 118kg more. As well as cooking daily in the galley Lexie also has mixed martial arts and weapons training, and is part of Te Kaha’s boarding team. Lexie and Te Kaha left for yearly pirate narcotic patrols in January and visited Gallipoli on Anzac Day before commencing Operation Haku. She says the first operation started as a normal day. “All of a sudden we got told to go to the boarding station. “On this particular day we were all a bit over it.” At first light the team took a light-

Born in Invercargill, Lexie moved to Havelock with her family when she was eight. She has been in the Navy for seven years, and says she loves the job. “I worked in Havelock at the

Slip Inn, and school didn’t really interest me. “My stepdad was involved in fishing, so he helped develop my interest a bit. “I love all of it. The training while getting paid, travelling the world and living at sea.” In two weeks Lexie leaves for Singapore for training exercises until the end of the year. The NZ Navy are involved in the Combined Maritime Forces, a 30-nation naval partnership covering about four million square kilometres of international water. Te Kaha was based in the Indian Ocean for seven weeks during May and June. She intercepted and searched nine dhows during that time, accounting for about a quarter of illegal drugs seized during that phase of the CMF.

Double-decker delight is coming By Jacob Page It’s safe to say Gary Wright’s latest vehicle purchase will turn heads in Marlborough. The Grovetown man has purchased a 1952 double-decker bus from Auckland. It is believed to be one of the oldest in New Zealand and Gary is hopeful of having the 53-seater ready for bookings by December. “My hobby is old cars and I have quite a few and I just wanted a point of difference in the company (Roadtrips Marlborough). “Every business needs something different… Basically I’m trying to make my work my hobby. “I had my eye on this bus for a long time; I started looking at it when I first started tour driving five years ago. “At that point I had no market for it and I didn’t know I was going to buy a bus company.” The company currently has four buses in service but Gary says the double decker should be a real

hit for summer time and the holidays. “I want to keep it looking old school,” he says. “I have all the London transport stickers for it, I want to get it painted, in fact I want it looking tip-top.” “There’s been a lot of interest in the progress of it and people seem genuinely excited about it.” Gary is doing most of the restoration work himself. “All going well I’d like it for the summer though I don’t want to put a time frame on it. “I drive for my own company and I’m my own mechanic and I own a small vineyard. “It’s going flat out at 50kph but it’s an amazing bus, it’s like nothing I’ve ever been in before.” Gary says the cost of restoration is more in time than money. “The chairs that I’ve made I’ve had to shape pieces and curve plywood but it’s more a physical cost than a time thing.”

Park spend questioned By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough resident is questioning the Marlborough District Council on their spend on a grass park by the Taylor River, saying she would prefer the funds to be used elsewhere. In Thursday’s council meeting a $1 million fund to create the park was ratified. The fund was approved at council’s Assets and Services meeting on July 21. The park was proposed as part of the library precinct which has been put on hold, but will now go ahead as part of council’s upgrade of the CBD. Blenheim Residents and Ratepayers Association chairperson Deedee Bancroft says she would

prefer funds to be reallocated to the Blenheim Skate Park. “I’m not opposed to parks but I think the library initiative should remain as one project, and we should invest in something the youth can use.” Marlborough youth recently

Deedee says the area could be revamped to include a market area and a designated area of the skate park where younger children could learn to skate. She says a revamp there, and at the adjacent building owned by Mayfield Motorworld, would also help make a positive impression on visitors. Council reserves and amenities manager Rosie Bartlett says steps have been taken to improve the skate park’s safety. She says a separate $60,000 design project coordinated by Blenheim Police and council, has

Rosie says CCTV cameras and 24-hour lighting have already been installed, and some vegetation has been cut away. Subscription for theatre aimed at quality and value By Jacob Page In a New Zealand first, an ambitious subscription plan to bring the likes of Dave Dobbyn, Christchurch’s Court Theatre and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra to Blenheim’s new ASB Theatre is trying to gain traction. With the theatre under a financial cloud of uncertainty, but likely to be built by November for a February 2016 unveiling, The Civic Theatre Trust has thrown its support behind former director Robin Sutherland’s ‘Cavalcade On Stage in Marlborough’ plan to offer 10 shows of local and national calibre for a subscription price. Robin says payments of $48 a month over 12 months ($576) would allow him to bring quality shows to Blenheim that would not otherwise come. He says he needs around 1000 subscriptions by October to con-

firm all 10 acts. The 10 shows will do two performances each in the 700-seat theatre, with one act coming each month from February to November. He says while a subscription has never been offered before in New Zealand, he said the model had proven successful in the United

Kingdom. “With this model it takes the financial pressure off the performers, so they are happier… We are the ones with the pressure on us to sell the tickets.” “It’s a great initiative and lowers the price of a ticket to around $57 as opposed to the $80 to $90 that

is generally paid. “Most shows go on the basis of a break even at half full but we will need a bit more than that.” He says the 10 acts were “in the middle band” and were different to what was currently being offered in Blenheim. “As the old saying goes, it’s easy to sell famous but hard to sell quality.” Robin says the subscription will be about more than just the show itself with plans for dinner and show packages with local restaurants, free non-alcoholic beverages offered to those who intend to drive home and an after-party with drinks and a chance to mingle with the cast, all on the cards. “It’s not just about going to the theatre; it’s about having a night out 10 times in the year.” For more information you can go to www.cavalcade.nz.

Sam into top 20 Marlborough Girls’ College old girl Sam McClung has made the top 20 of this year’s Miss Universe New Zealand pageant. Sam heads to the Philippines in about three weeks on retreat, with the grand final to take place in October. Sam was born in Christchurch before moving to Marlborough when she was eight. She now works as a tutor at Christchurch’s Kristen Stewart School of Make-Up. Sam’s voting system will be in place shortly, and her progress will be charted on the ‘Samantha McClung’ Facebook page.

Renwick School makeover ‘treemendous’

Almost 600 people transformed the outdoor area of Marlborough’s Renwick School last Friday in what was one of the biggest Treemendous School Makeovers yet. The Treemendous School Makeover programme is a joint initiative between the Mazda Foundation and conservation charity Project Crimson, and sees four schools selected each year to receive a $10,000 outdoor area makeover featuring native plants. Over 2500 natives were planted making it one of the biggest makeovers to date. Pathways and viewing platforms now run alongside the creek and the area is lined with carved Poupou. An amphitheatre was also built as an outdoor classroom where students can go to observe and immerse themselves in nature. Part of the Renwick Community Creek which runs through the school was restored. The creek was in a state of neglect, full of litter and weeds.

Students picked up the rubbish and cleared the weeds, turning it into a suitable habitat for local bird life. It doubled as a science project for the students, who measured the water quality and recorded creature activity leading up to the makeover. They will re-examine the area soon to observe the changes the clean-up has made. All the students were rewarded with a sausage sizzle for their hard work throughout the day. School principal, Simon Heath, was thrilled with the results of the working bee and thanked all the pupils, teachers and community members involved. Thomas back in action at Brayshaw Park By Adam Poulopoulos After spending the last few months getting repairs, Marlborough Vintage Farm Machinery Society staff say their tractor, Thomas, is up-andrunning again. The tractor, which is painted in the style of Thomas from Thomas the Tank Engine and takes carriages of people around Brayshaw Park, will return to service on Sunday between 10am and 3pm. Brayshaw Park caretaker Eddie Gallop drives the tractor, while grandson Justin, 8, will act as the conductor on the attached carriages. Eddie says Thomas has been out of action since March, undergoing mechanical repairs. “It needed a bit of an overhaul really.

To mark Thomas’s return a Devonshire tea will also be held, while the nearby Pioneer Cottage, which was built in 1882, donated to the park and redone in a similar style, will be open. “The cottage isn’t open very often and we thought we’d take the opportunity,” Alison says. “It’s like walking into your grandmother’s house.” She says the blacksmith’s shop will also be open from lunchtime onwards. I remain working in Picton until April and then I’ll head to Perth for an industrial electrician apprenticeship.

I’m planning to study health science at the University of Otago and then I’ll likely head to Australia.

I want to go to Timaru and do a sports and fitness course at Aoraki Polytechnic. If that doesn’t work out I’ll stay here and do an electrician apprenticeship.

Dog park Dear Ed, As an owner of one social friendly dog & one reactive elderly dog, I think there is a great need for a dog park down the Taylor River. I walk my two dogs separately, as a matter of having to due to my older dog’s reactive behaviour. Unless I am in an area where I can see other dogs approaching in the distance, I always have my older dog on lead. I try to time my walks with her when I know it will be quieter now, as I’ve been at the river with her & other dog owners let their dogs approach us even though she’s on

lead & I call out to them to say my dog doesn’t like other dogs. Even if I walk her on the lead area near town, no one else has their dogs on lead & they allow them to approach us. Now it’s too stressful for me to walk her down there. If owners were more responsible, I would probably be able to walk my dogs together on lead occasionally & not have to worry about other people’s dogs as well. I have had many instances at the river, where owners think everyone’s dogs are as social as theirs & it ends up with them acting as

if I’m in the wrong. I think the upper Taylor, from Burleigh Bridge should be off lead, so people can let their dogs run & play. But I would like from Burleigh into town to be on lead with the fenced off leash area. Then I & many others I know of could take our dogs & children there together & it would be an enjoyable walk. I always put my social dog on lead when I see dogs coming towards us and also if I see people walking who don’t have dogs with them.

I think it’s common courtesy as the river walk is for everyone. Also I’ve observed a lot of small dogs who are terrified of bigger dogs. So I think having the option of separating them would be better for everyone. Another thing I think would be great to make people aware of when registering their dogs are the friendly collars & what each colour stands for. That way people can tell from a distance if they’re walking towards a friendly dog or not. -Kalita Cresswell

eight years ago, and a young N Z Army Soldier sang the anthem at almost marching speed. It was the best performance I have ever heard by a solo singer. Pick up the pace Dear Ed, Andrew Little is right to compare the National Anthem to a dirge, because that is the way everyone likes to sing or play it. There is nothing wrong with the tune, although the words are possibly a bit outdated these days. I would like everyone reading this to try an experiment and see what a difference it makes.

Sing or hum the tune as if you were marching to it, and I mean at a march speed, 120 paces per minute. You will be surprised at how much of a difference that speed will make to the anthem. Most singers like to warble it along slowly, so as to try and show how great they are, but if they sang it at a quicker speed, it would be

Life in the limelight Marlborough Boys’ College old boy Jeremy Falconer has turned a childhood hobby into a career, all while staying in Blenheim. While many of his college mates left for the big smoke to chase their dream, Jeremy has turned his interest in theatre production into a passion at The Civic Theatre. He talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about how a gap year job has turned into so much more. When Jeremy was 10-years-old he and his cousins used to put on mini plays at his grandmother’s house to entertain themselves over the Christmas holiday period. Now the 26-year-old is doing it on a much larger scale as the Operations Manager for the Marlborough Civic Theatre and Marlborough Light and Sound. “We always used to put on little shows at the house stringing up some of the curtains. “When we went on our third form trip to see Fame, I watched the guys do the follow spots and the next year was South Pacific, so I got involved from there. “When I finished school that’s when the job came up as a tech, so it was perfect timing.” Jeremy says it was also the time Marlborough Light and Sound began to “take off” which meant a higher demand for offsite jobs at festivals and events around Marlborough. “I deal with a lot of the lighting design and organising for Marlborough Light and Sound, which is the offsite part of the Theatre. To be fair, there’s probably more offsite stuff now so that’s been a change.” Jeremy says he often does “a bit of everything” nowadays from lighting setup to stage dismantling and of course paper work. He says choreographing lighting for a show is largely trial and error. “We will watch rehearsals three or four weeks out from opening night and go through the script to get the mood and the feel for the scenes.” He says the arrival of colour changing LED lights offers more flexibility. “I’ve tried to learn off the various touring crews that come through but you get a feel for what works. “We’ll spend two days programming the lights for a musical which gives you a base of 150-200 cues to start with and then we make notes for changes and usually by the second-to-last rehearsal we have it sorted.”

Jeremy says he has been asked to join touring groups but it is the variety of shows and the lifestyle of Marlborough that has kept him motivated. He says the move to the new theatre in February 2016 will make things easier and safer for his crew. “At the moment there are plenty of confined spaces so we have ladders here where we have to be harnessed whereas the new theatre will have stairs. “At the moment, the orchestra pit has 12 guys working on it for an hour, while at the new theatre it will be a case of pushing a button and it will fold up and lift up all the equipment as well.” Jeremy says he has no plans to change his happy formula. “I love what I do, I’m busy but it’s satisfying.”

Basics to prevent the flu Influenza has made the headlines across the country in recent weeks as the illness has struck schools, day care centres and even rest homes. Symptoms of influenza come on suddenly and can include a fever, chills, muscle aches, runny nose, a cough and stomach upsets. Nationwide data collected from general practices between July 27 – August 2 indicated that numbers were continuing to rise. This serves as a timely reminder that people who are unwell with influenza should stay away from work and school and seek medical advice if they are concerned. To help prevent the spread of illness, here is some advice. • Prevent the spread of illness by ensuring everyone covers their mouth and nose with tissues when

coughing and sneezing. If there are no tissues available, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve – not your hands. • Remember to wash your hands afterwards. • Encourage everyone to wash their hands regularly. Clean hands are really important in preventing the spread of winter viruses. Wash hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water and dry them for 20 seconds with a dry towel or paper towel. • Clean surfaces that are touched a lot (door handles, bench tops, toilet and bathroom areas). One of the most effective and cheapest disinfecting solutions to clean these surfaces is a solution of household bleach and water.

Winter Warmth 2015 Insulating your home High-quality, well-installed insulation helps keep the heat in during winter and keep it out during summer. This makes your house easier and cheaper to heat properly, and more comfortable and healthy to live in. It is estimated as many as 600,000 New Zealand houses have insufficient ceiling or underfloor insulation, and insulation can move or become less effective over time. The order of priority for insulating your home should be: 1. Ceiling 2. Underfloor 3. Walls 4. Windows Having a professional install insulation for you The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority recommends using a trained professional to install or upgrade your insulation, as even small faults in how the insulation is installed can compromise its performance. Find a list of insulation installers on the Yellow Pages website. The Insulation Association of New Zealand also has a list of insulation installers

that have gone through the association’s training for installing ceiling and underfloor insulation. Installing insulation yourself If you are considering the DIY approach, everything you need to know about installing insulation is in the New Zealand Standard for Installing Insulation (4246:2006).

Heating Association assures quality and safety net

It’s easy to follow with lots of colour pictures, and it’s free to download. As with all DIY projects, there are safety considerations. Make sure you read and follow the Health and Safety advice in Appendix B of New Zealand Standard 4246:2006. If you’re not sure, get a professional to install the insulation for you.

Heating effectively Choosing an efficient heating or cooling system for your house will help you maintain healthy indoor temperatures, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and manage your power bill. Heating accounts for about 29 per cent of all the energy consumed in a typical New Zealand home. Despite this, the majority of New Zealand’s homes are underheated by international standards. Use the right type of heater There are a lot of heating options for homes, but using the right kind of heater for your circumstances will mean that you can keep your home warm,

healthy and comfortable to live in while keeping running costs low. Choosing the right heating system can also help our environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.

It is not just about the heater you choose - clean, effective heating is also about having a well-insulated house and using your heaters wisely. Heat your home to a healthy temperature

Keeping your home warm is important for your health and comfort and a good heating system (coupled with proper insulation, ventilation and moisture control) makes it much easier to do. The World Health Organisation recommends the following minimum indoor temperatures, which are also supported by the Ministry of Health: • A minimum of 18°C or a minimum of 20°C for more vulnerable groups like children, the elderly and people who are ill. • A minimum of 16°C in your bedroom overnight. These recommended temperatures apply to all rooms while you are using them.

Heating Marlborough’s Peter Cairns says choosing a company who is part of the New Zealand Home Heating Association gives consumers another safety net if they have issues. Peter says being part of the association means a company like his is using the latest instalment methods with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. “We go through refresher courses every two years which means we are completely up-to-date with the latest techniques.” The New Zealand Home Heating Association was formed in 1985, by a group of wood heating manufacturers and retailers who saw a need to improve the standards of product and workmanship within the industry. Since then the association has played an active role in the development of appliance and installation standards both nationally and internationally and has become the industry’s mouthpiece. It also plays a major role in the development and promotion of clean air standards, and energy and resource conservation. It runs a certification for installer and retailer members to help ensure that the appropriate standards are maintained at all levels within the industry. The association is affiliated with similar trade groups and organisations throughout the world. The New Zealand Home Heating Association is a trade organisation, comprising most of NZ’s leading woodfire manufacturers, retailers and installers, and is dedicated to providing professional services and advice to its members and their customers.

Devilish supporters The Tasman Red Devils Supporters Club travelled to Murchison to support the Marlborough team in their Seddon Shield semifinal victory over West Coast. Marlborough won 24-19 to set up a challenge against holders, the Tasman Griffins, for the shield in Nelson on Saturday September 5, after a strong second half display saw them down Buller 36-6. Many of the club had been going to Marlborough games since 1989.

Fashion parade to excite By Adam Poulopoulos Staff at the Marlborough Red Cross are looking to back up their inaugural fashion parade last year with a bigger and better one this year. The event is being held on Tuesday, September 8 from 7pm-9pm. This year’s event is being held in the Elim Church foyer on Burleigh Road, a change from last year’s parade, which was hosted at the Red Cross rooms. The event will feature modelling of women’s clothes from the Red Cross community shop, with proceeds going back into Marlborough support services including Meals on Wheels and the community visitors’ service. Business brewing for Hayleigh By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim woman, who may be one of the region’s youngest business managers, is enjoying her time in her new role. Hayleigh Lammas 18, operates Hayleigh’s Coffee out of a coffee cart on Middle Renwick Road. Hayleigh has run the cart since April, and is leasing it from owners Tony and Karen Gill until she is able to buy it. The cart is based in the carpark of Tony and Karen’s business Gill Construction. Hayleigh worked at Z Coffee and has an interest in hairdressing, but she says she was not expecting to go into business so early.

“I didn’t think I’d ever get into coffee. “I want to make sure it does well for itself.” She says she originally ran the cart for a week, but it has turned into a permanent arrangement. “They (Tony and Karen) are really good family friends. They were looking for someone to run it as their daughter (previous owner Holly Gill) left for other things. I ended up really enjoying it.” Hayleigh says she makes up to 150 coffees a day, and plans to take the cart to events during the summer. She also hopes to add more food and beverage options in the near future.

Catterick rides into NZ junior squad By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim cyclist has allied her talent with commitment off the road to earn one of the biggest call-ups of her career. Georgia Catterick has been selected to head to the United States in the New Zealand junior squad to race in the UCI Road World Championships. The event is being held in Richmond, Virginia from September 19-27. Catterick will race in both the road race and time trial at the event. Catterick says her first trip to the US has been “a goal for ages.” Competing in the National Road Series in Australia this season, she finished second in the national time trial and fifth in the road race at Mersey Valley, Tasmania in early May. She also claimed second in the under-19 tour of Tasmania. Catterick is currently training about 16 hours a week, but she has been working hard away from the bike too. I had a 40 degree curve in my spine,” she says. “I started going really badly on the bike for no reason and I didn’t know why. “I was lucky that I’d finished growing and it wasn’t going to get any worse.” She currently works about 30 hours a week at Subway to fund her travel, and worked at Cycle World over the summer too. “Subway has been really good with my hours. They basically give me hours when I’m not training,” she says. Before going to the US, Catterick heads to Australia in about a week’s time to race in another NRS tour, the Sam Miranda Tour of the King Valley in Victoria. She hopes to fundraise for the US trip later this month.
